Part of the course New technology is to do research on technology. Below are listed selected student's papers from the course in 2007:
Ólafur Hrafnsson: The rise of robotics
In this paper, the commercialization of robotics for the public will be discussed. It will be looked into which robotic products are becoming popular and how these products will or can affect society and the life of the common man. To establish a connection to the past and present, history and popular media will be mentioned along with a few key innovators who helped push the technology in the direction it has gone. Military, security and nanorobots among others will not be discussed here, but rather the large and somewhat minimally exploited mass market.
Ari Geir Hauksson and Sverrir Ásmundsson: Data Storage Technologies
The Solid State Drive will soon become the de facto
standard of main data storage for computers. It will
replace the Hard Disk Drive in a similar manner the
Hard Disk Drive replaced the Magnetic Tape just
over 20 years ago. In this paper we will discuss the
different technologies behind the two and give
arguments for why the Solid State Drive will be the
successor of the Hard Disk Drive, both in
conventional computing and in other types of devices
both portable and stationary. We will also speculate
on what difference the penetration of the Solid State
Drive will make in the evolvement of computing and
the effect it has on peoples every day life.
Svanur Bjornsson: Console Convergence
This paper discusses the current trend of convergence that is taking place in the
field of game consoles with home entertainment, which is evident in current
consoles such as XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3. Since PlayStation 2 appeared,
this trend has increased considerably, especially with Microsoft and Sony who
are now competing for dominance over the living room. The paper will also discuss how this might affect the average consumer and if
this evolution is a positive one, considering that the origins of these consoles was
to play games only. The paper will go into some detail regarding current user
groups, as well as acceptance rate considering the machines’ capabilities. It will
also compare the convergence to more specialized systems such as Nintendo
Wii who have so far decided to disregard the current convergence.
Haraldur Sćmundsson: Home Entertainment
This report will look at the evolution of the home entertainment system such as audio,
video and television. How these systems evolved to the digitalization of the
modern world and being a part of the digital home. The report will begin to look at
how the audio, video and television came about and how they maturated. We will
look at the trends and how the devices were received by the consumers, what was on
the top and what went under. In the end we will discuss what will the future will
bring us and see what the consequences are of the digitalization.
Davíđ H. Brandt: Accelerating Online Gaming
While network throughput is on a rapid rise and computer graphics have reached
unprecedented heights, online gamers are often perplexed when they perceive many of
the same forms of lag in online games running over broadband connections as were
present during dial-up modem play. This arises among other from a few common misconceptions.
These terms and the misconceptions arising from them are explored in this paper, as the
primary focus of this paper is to provide an overview of many of the underlying reasons for
lag in online gaming.
